I used to love running on my treadmill. I mean, I really did. It was inside – no wind, no rain, no snow or ice. I could watch TV (hello, West Wing DVDs! The Walking Dead and Sons of Anarchy were good too.) And with weather conditions in Manitoba often being frigid for 6+ months of the year, getting used to the treadmill was a fact, not a choice. (Hey, I wrote about what happens when I run outside on ice. It’s not pretty).
But lately, for a couple of reasons, my love affair with my ‘mill has been on hold. For one thing, I really do prefer running outside, and after a ridiculously warm winter, we had even more ridiculous temperatures recently (hello, +20C in MARCH?? Unheard of). So running outside was almost required – who wants to run inside on gorgeous balmy days like that?
The other reason is that I’m having some electrical issues. My headphones keep snapping & popping in my ears, sometimes shocking me so badly I actually stop, swear, pull the earbud out, and rub away the sting. I have tried new earbuds, a new headphone extension cable, and I have even stopped using my TV/DVD player combo and instead plug into my laptop to watch DVDs. No dice – I’m still getting shocked. I’m sure it has something to do with the cord of the earbuds touching the treadmill, but other than wrapping the cord around a plastic bottle, I’m at a loss of what to do. So I’ve been (happily) running outside and avoiding the issue.
The last couple of days the weather has been crappy. (OK, really, it is normal for March, but we’ve been spoiled, so… crappy). It has hovered around freezing, it has been really windy, and just generally not nice running conditions. Friday and Saturday I bailed completely. Sunday, I did a long bike ride instead of running. By Monday, I really needed to run. I just didn’t want to. It was windy… 40-60 kph winds (35 mph? about?). And not really warm. But I knew I had to run, so I begged Bruce to go with me, and off we went for a windy, hard, short run. We only did 3.1 miles (5 km), and it took 29:24. And it was HARD. But we did it, and I was proud of myself for finding the motivation to not blow it off. I still don’t know what I’m going to do about the electric snaps in my ears though!
Daily goals update: I ROCKED my goals yesterday. 🙂 I swam, I biked, I ran. I commented, and commented… (I have over 500 posts in my Google reader since adding all the Summer Challengers… I’m working on getting to you all, I promise!). I worked a little on 1 blog post – something had to give, there are only so many hours in a day, right? And I’m making a habit of reading for 15-30 minutes right before I go to bed. WINNING!!
