I started off this post with no idea what I would write about, then inspiration struck when I saw this post on Caitlin’s blog. Coupled with this week’s Friend Makin’ Monday topic, it seemed like the perfect time to reflect on things. Then a personal issue struck, and I wound up not in the mood to write at all…. some days are like that, you know?
So instead I took a break, picked up the book I’m currently reading (You Are an Ironman: How Six Weekend Warriors Chased Their Dream of Finishing the World’s Toughest Triathlon Amazon affiliate link) and read a couple of chapters.
This book has done more to inspire me lately than anything… it tells the story of six first time Ironman competitors, all of whom signed up for Ironman Arizona 2009. At this point, I’m not quite half way done, and all six are training for the big event. Some of them are doing it for their health, for some it’s a bucket list item. Some are raising money for charity. All of them are inspiring.
I’ve been a little disappointed that our planned highlight race of the season, Ironman 70.3 Calgary, can’t happen due to scheduling. Add to that a trip to FL to run the Goofy, and the choice of a trip to Vegas for my birthday, and we really can’t afford another big trip anyway – but it’s still disappointing. We still plan to complete a 70.3 race this season, but it will be a much smaller, local event, without all the ceremony of a big race. Part of the fun of racing is all the extras – the race expo, the medals, the excitement and party at the finish line.
I really, really want to do an Ironman. A branded, WTC Ironman. I know there are lots of triathletes out there who have issues with the WTC (yes, $275 and $550 for registration is outrageous!), but the races still appear to be well organized, well attended, and well executed. And I want Mike Reilly to say”You are an Ironman” when I cross that finish line!
We are now looking ahead to 2013 & 2014 – an Ironman 70.3 in 2013, and a full distance in 2014 – perhaps even Arizona. Guess I’ll just have to keep training, and saving to pay for it!
Goals update: I actually got 4/4 done yesterday, although I was falling asleep on the couch as I was reading and writing this blog post!
