Skin and Hair Care

OK, so chlorine is horrible for hair, especially coloured hair. It’s not super good for skin either.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been struggling with how to properly care for my skin and hair, considering I’m trying to swim 3X per week, run 5X per week, bike 3+X per week… that adds up to a LOT of showers, a lot of time in chlorinated pools, and a lot of potential damage to my skin and hair.

Add to that the fact it is WINTER here, and -40C is not an uncommon event, and dry, itchy skin is almost impossible to avoid. The straw that broke the camel’s back for me, though, was a wicked acne outbreak on both my face and back.

So, how does a budding triathlete combat this? I’ve been playing with different skin care products, everything from body wash to lotion, and have even seen a doctor about the acne.

The antibiotics he gave me seem to be helping, thank goodness. More importantly, I seem to have found a good skin product that is reducing my dry skin (and therefor the itching!). I’ve been using Olay moisturizing body wash, and I bought a soft bristle back brush. I use both when I shower at home (at the gym I skip the brush). It seems to be helping a lot.

I have also been using Aveeno lotion to counter some of the dryness as well. I have sensitivities to many lotions with heavy scents, but Aveeno is one of the few I can use without a reaction.

Finally, I bought a silicone swim cap. I bought the pink one. 🙂 I had a latex one, but the silicone one doesn’t pull my hair as much, and seems to provide better coverage. Because I’m washing my hair at least twice a day most days, I have started using both a wash out conditioner, and a leave in one, which seems to help it stay softer.

I get the ends trimmed once a month, and try to keep the roots coloured – it’s getting harder to hide the grey, but I’m not willing to give up yet!

At this point, any suggestions are welcome – how do you keep your skin and hair healthy?
