Trying to Stay on Track While on Vacation

So today Bruce and I head to Las Vegas for our first real adult vacation ever. We’re doing this right in the middle of peak Half Ironman training – perhaps not the best planning we’ve ever done. 😛 So how can we stay on track while still having fun? Here’s my plan:

Exercise. We are taking running gear and swimming gear with us. While we are not planning any long runs, but we will run at least a couple of times just to stretch our legs. Plus we’ll swim a couple of times too – maybe not any long, intense workouts, but at least we’ll be in the water.

Food. This has the potential to be a disaster. I have a few plans, including taking some Clif bars to snack on and trying to find a smoothie bar to ensure I get some healthy fruits for breakfast most of the days we’re there. But I know we’ll be eating at a few buffets, and several restaurants with rich, calorie-laden, high fat foods. As for the liquor… well, there’s going to be a fair bit of that too.

So how will I try to stay on track? Lots of walking, for one thing. Will I track my food? Some of it. Will I try to make conscious decisions? Yes. Sometimes I will choose to eat the high fat, high calories decadent treats. But my goal is to also make good choices most of the time. Start the day with a healthy breakfast. If I have a heavy lunch, go light at dinner. If I know we’re going out for a big dinner, have a salad for lunch. I plan to try to make sure to get at least my five fruits & vegetables daily. And while I will indulge in a Krispy Kreme donut (sugar coma guaranteed), I will not indulge in them daily. This is important, because we don’t have them where I live in Canada, and having discovered them in Florida, I’m addicted now!

As far as drinks go, unfortunately, I like high calorie drinks like margaritas, or hard liquor mixed with fruit juice. I do like white wine though, so choosing that more often will help me control the liquid calories I’m consuming!

It’s my vacation, and my birthday (yes, there will probably be some sort of cake), and I plan to have fun without feeling deprived. But I also don’t intend to gain a whole lot of weight in my six days away. Let’s see how I do!

Goals: Blogs posts, yes. Mani-pedi, yes. Final Vegas prep, yes. Long bike ride? Well, we rode, but not as long as I had planned – it was crazy windy and hard to deal with so we stopped early.

I won’t be doing daily goals until we get back, but I will be blogging a little from Vegas. We’re taking two cameras so there will be pictures!

    I got up early one morning in Vegas and ran the strip. It was awesome — clearly some people drunk from the night before, and I had to go into a casino to try to get my water bottle refilled (even early, it was hot, but they “weren’t allowed” to fill my bottle, so I had to get a glass of water and pour it in). It was a nice run, very memorable, and longer than I realized. Hope you have a great trip!

      Thanks! So far, I’ve been doing OK – drinking a little to much alcohol, but not over eating a ridiculous amount. 🙂
