WEverb11 #15 – Surprise

Day 15. Today’s #WEverb11 prompt is Surprise.

What event of 2011 affected you in an unexpected way?

Funny, tomorrow’s prompt is persevere… and it’s going to tie into today’s surprise so well!

In January of 2011, the VP of our division announced we would be going through a restructuring. The job I held (along with 8 other people) was being eliminated. We were all guaranteed positions (of some sort), but what they would be and how it would be structured was not announced at the time. I loved my job… and this was a horrible surprise that left me shaken and frustrated.

I know I was fortunate – in this economy, any job is better than no job, and frankly, even with my MBA, finding work that would replace my income would be difficult. But the uncertainty of what was going to happen was frustrating, and scary. Really, a very challenging surprise to deal with!

Goals update:

4/4 yesterday! Bedrooms cleaned, core workout squeezed in, staff interviews done, and blog post written.

Goals for today:

1) 1 more blog post!
2) Book hotel for Minneapolis
3) Tidy main floor rooms
4) Spend less time in my office/more time on the floor at work!

Any type of ‘surprise’ at work always makes me nervous for some reason. I feel that my job is pretty stable, but at the same time I know that things can change at any given moment – I know that sounds contradictory! I guess that’s the problem and why surprise announcements at work (like salary restructuring) make me tense!

Our company does these reorgs every few years, but this was my first one. It was not pleasant! I hope to avoid any issues for a few more years now. 🙂
