What Would You Do With an Extra 15 Hours a Week?

So I have been drowning lately – work has been crazy, training has been eating my time like I eat leftover Easter candy, and frankly, I’ve just been tired. I was talking to my husband, trying to figure out why I feel like he has so much more time than me. It’s not that he doesn’t do his share – he does a lot of the housework, I meal plan but he helps with the cooking, he does a lot of other stuff with the kids too – so why does he “appear” to have so much more free time than I do?

Well, we actually started to figure it out! Here are some of the differences:

Bruce Kris
Work: 37.5 hours/ week Work: 40 hours/ week
Commute: 1.5 hours/ week Commute: 5-7 hours/week
Prep time: 2.5 hours/week Prep time: 5+ hours/week
Errands: 1-2 hours/ week Errands: 5+ hours/week
Blogging: 0 hours Blogging: 6+ hours/week
Total: 43+ hours/week Total: 61+ hours/week

Basic math? Other than blogging, which I do because I enjoy it, I have at least 12 hours a week of commitments Bruce doesn’t have. Plus, although he is training for the Fargo Marathon in May (so he is running more), we are both training for the Racine Ironman 70.3 in July, so our workout demands are similar… except he’s faster than me, so he takes less time to cover the same distances!

Sigh. No wonder I’m tired. Most nights, I’m on the couch blogging while we both “watch” TV (Is it watching if it’s really just background noise?). Of course, this is only after squeezing in a workout after work… and trying to get to bed by 11:30 so I can get up by 6:00 am (or earlier!) the next morning!

Bruce is also able to come home or go to the gym and get in a swim, bike or run on his lunch hour – I am not able to do that (oh yeah, I forgot… my 40 hours are more like 42.5, because I don’t really get a break).

So we were talking this past weekend, and he pointed out to me, if I’d LET GO of things, he could do more. He’s right, I know… I’m a bit of a control freak, but he is willing to do these things, I’ve just always DONE them. So I’m working on that – this week on Thursday, he will be picking up one of our kids while I run the other one to an appointment. I’ll split the grocery list this week, he’ll tackle one store, I’ll do the other one. It will save me time, and still get everything done. Same thing with some of the non-standard household chores – I know if I give him a list, he’ll tackle them as he has time.

So that’s the new plan. Fingers crossed that it works, as I have been contacted to potentially do some guest posting on other blogs, and if I’m going to do that, I have to give something up!

Goals update: I was too tired to get up and go swim. Working nights just mucks up my swimming schedule. I did get a nice run in. I filed our tax returns, and I wrote two blog posts. Decent!

Goals for today:

1) Dentist appointment
2) Comment on 5-10 blogs
3) Write 2 blog posts

That is totally interesting to see how your week stacks up against your husbands. I wonder what it would like if I did that with my hubs. I realize that my work load around the house would probably be lighter if I allowed my husband more of an opportunity to help. But I am such a control freak about certain things (like grocery shopping) and I really only end up overwhelming myself.

I know – I was shocked when we started actually looking at numbers! And yes, normally I’m a total control freak too, but I’ve been letting up lately – I sent him shopping a couple of weeks ago with two long, detailed lists, and you know what? The world didn’t end. 😛 He got everything except two items (they were sold out), and he only bought two extra items (that I didn’t know we needed). And he saved me about 2 hours doing it!

Ah… letting go means .. things not being done properly… or maybe that’s just in my head! :p

LOL!! I thought so too, but honestly my husband is perfectly capable of doing these things, so why shouldn’t he?
